Transportation
Delta County is centrally located on the Western Slope of Colorado, and is easily accessed by U.S. Highways 50 and 550. State Highways 92, 133, 65 and 348 also provide convenient access through the county. The major combinations of U.S. 50 and 550 running both north and south through the Western Slope serve as the only major north/south connection for the western half of Colorado.

Two of the largest railroads in the country service the Delta area. Burlington Northern and Santa Fe Railway (BNSF) and Union Pacific and Southern Pacific (UP/SP) strive to “ensure that rail competition is preserved and enhanced in the West.” Connecting East to West, both rail lines are the mid-west’s link for transporting all types of freight around the world. Passenger rail service is available in Grand Junction via Amtrak.

Grand Junction Regional Airport
(formerly known as Walker Field) located in Grand
is a modern, all-weather airport. Located approximately within a 40-minute drive from Delta County. Congestion and weather-related delays, common in urban areas, are rare at Walker Field. Five major and regional airlines serve Salt Lake City, Phoenix and Denver with numerous daily flights. Private aircraft also have the advantage of five excellent service, and maintenance facilities located at the airport. Walker Field did not close for any weather related events even one time during 2003, and only once during 2004 and 2005.
Grand Junction Regional Airport’s main runway is 10,500 feet long, 150 feet wide with 20-foot-wide paved shoulders. Runway 4/22, the cross-wind runway, is 5,500 feet long, 75 feet wide. All runways feature parallel taxiways. Runway lighting systems are controlled by the Air Traffic Control Tower, which is manned 16 hours per day. Runway lighting is pilot-controlled after ATCT hours of operation.
Montrose Regional Airport
offers daily commercial service to Houston, Phoenix, and
Denver, and seasonal (December through April) service to Newark, Dallas, and Chicago. United, America West and Continental airlines all serve this airport.
MRA has two runways. The longest and widest runway is 10,000 feet long and 150 feet wide, with a pavement rating of 75,000 for single wheel landing gear aircraft and 190,000 pounds for dual wheel gear aircraft. Additionally, the runway has a precision instrument approach. The second runway is 7,500 feet in length and 100 feet wide, and is considered a non-precision runway. Both runways have high intensity runway lights which are pilot controlled. There is also a rotating beacon to assist pilots in locating the airport facility at night and during periods of inclement weather.
Several smaller public and private airparks also exist within Delta County. These include North Fork Valley Airport, Crawford Airport and Delta Airpark (also known as Hawkins Field).
