From the Past... a historical perspective compiled from Delta newspapers by the Delta County Historical Society

 “What Delta County Has...

30-1/2 miles of railroad. A first class creamery. 30-1/2 miles of telegraph. Over 3,000 hives of bees. Mild and pleasant winters. Fine schools and churches. Most fertile soil in America. 42,722 acres of grazing land. The finest vegetables grown. Over 12,000 acres in orchard. The purest of mountain water. Peach trees which net $20 each. 62,120 acres of agricultural land. Cherry trees which net $15 each. Cool, delightful healthy summers. 5 carloads of honey shipped yearly. The largest and best cattle ranges. The finest trout fishing in the state. Long distance telephone connection. A million dollar crop of fruit this year. Rich in undeveloped natural resources. The finest hunting grounds in the west. Apples weighing 20 to 24 ounces each. Potatoes weighing 4 and 5 pounds each. No blizzards or cyclones nor hail storms. Four out of six World’s Fair medals for fruit. The grandest scenery in the Rocky Mountains. A first class canning factory and evaporator. Pear trees that yield $15 worth of fruit a year. Altitude from 4,900 to 10,000 feet above sea level. An abundance of timber and fine building stone. Never has been “boomed” and does not want to be. Peaches that measure 12 to 14 inches in circumference. Coal veins, anthracite and bituminous, 5 to 25 feet thick. Apple trees that will net the owner from $5 to $10 each. Tremendous water power in all the mountain streams. All temperate zone fruits can be raised to perfection. An ideal place for an outing for tourists and sportsmen. It has every prospect of another line of railroad in a short time. The finest summer resort in the west at the lakes on Grand Mesa. The coming summer resort of the whole Rocky Mountain region. The chief industries are fruit growing, agriculture and stock raising. Meadows that average five tons of alfalfa hay per acre each season. Farming land and fruit tracts with good water supply can be purchased at reasonable figures. Room for 10,000 families who want good health, good schools, good churches and good homes. Offers the greatest inducement for the investment of capital of any section on the western slope. Four fifths of all the premiums offered on the various fruits at all fairs where (Delta County) has been a competitor. The most healthful climate in the world for those who have lung or throat troubles or asthma. A welcome to home seekers of moderate means, to whom it gives promise of health, wealth and happiness. Has several important and growing towns - Delta, Hotchkiss, Paonia, Cory, Crawford, Eckert and Cedaredge. Thousands of acres not yet under cultivation but which could be reclaimed by a ditch from the Gunnison river. The most favorable location for stock raising in the west - an abundance of natural grass and an immense free range. Every statement made in the above is absolutely correct and can be verified. When looking for a home or for the investment capital, it will pay to investigate the opportunities and resources of Delta County before you make up your minds where to go.”

“There is nothing like returning to a place that remains unchanged to find the ways in which you yourself have altered.”

– Nelson Mandela
