At an altitude of 5,645 feet above sea level, and nestled in high mountains, the Paonia area has become famous for its organic vegetables, cherries and apples. Peaches, apricots, prunes, grapes and pears are produced on farms ranging from one to one hundred acres. Paonia is gradually being discovered as the premier location in Colorado to grow excellent grapes for wine production because of the air flowing up the valley at night and cool air flowing down the valley from the mountains during the day.
World-renown artists have congregated in Paonia, attracted by both the scenic beauty, a world-class bronze foundry, and the rich historical buildings located here.
Recreation around Paonia is diverse and endless. Fish the gold medal waters of the Black Canyon of the Gunnison or any of the numerous high country streams or beaver ponds. Paonia State Park, at an elevation of 6,500 feet, offers camping, picnicking, fishing and boating. The park also offers a 334-surface acre reservoir, with campsites, vault toilets and a concrete boat ramp. Paonia State Park is surrounded by the Gunnison National Forest and spectacular mountain scenery.
